Sasso Cavallo - Cassin
View route detailsThe fame of Sasso Cavallo is well known to everyone, as is its approach. We set off even before dawn on this beautiful day from the Ballabio petrol station with the ambitious plan of climbing the notorious Cassin route in a single push. The approach is long, though not as much as various reports suggest, and the snow encountered after the Bietti Buzzi hut does not exactly make progress easy. Despite this, our heroes manage to reach the Cavallo face relatively quickly. Finding the start, however, is not so simple: it used to be marked with a red paint dot, now completely invisible. The wall is less wide than expected, so we descend along the west side trying to interpret the topo of Calcare d’autore. After some wandering around, we identify the start of the route, which—once found—turns out to be logical and impossible to miss. A significant drawback is a series of pitches on vertical grass. Vegetation in fact invades the V+ pitch that follows the first aid pitch (for which a Camalot #2 is needed), as well as many others. Towards the end there are two truly beautiful pitches, but in my opinion they are not enough to make this a beautiful route. As proof of this, one only has to think of the final two pitches: literally a vertical meadow. The descent is long, especially the uphill section between the Bietti hut and Cainallo, which, after the morning run-in, completely destroys my legs.
