Val Febbraro - Cascata di Borghetto

View route details

Yet another pre-dawn alarm: we head to Val Febbraro, destination “Salto del Nido.” Unfortunately, there is no track leading to Salto del Nido. We decide to try a different icefall (also without any track) to the right of Borghetto, but once we reach the base, we’d rather stay smelly than get showered by ice, so we turn back and head for the Borghetto icefall instead. That one doesn’t convince us much either, but after a couple of ice axe swings we realize it’s better than it first looked. The bold Jacopo ventures onto the first grade 4 pitch as his first-ever lead, and he does it well. The pitch isn’t very thick, but the ice is excellent. For those interested: Salto del Nido is in excellent condition but the approach is a track-breaking slog; Borghetto is in excellent condition on the right side; other icefalls are in decent shape.
