Monte Castello - Aldebaran
View route detailsI wouldn’t want to encourage too many people to repeat this terrifying route, so I’ll just say it’s a horrible climb, with a nightmare approach, rotten rock, and belays with 8 mm bolts (that last part is actually true). Maybe it’s the barely three-hour approach that discourages most people, but every now and then it’s nice to find yourself in places that feel completely out of this world. In the route description I didn’t even sketch the Castello wall, because it’s such a mess that I would have created more confusion than anything else. The line, however, is logical — impossible to lose and generally straight up. The blue paint markings at the base of the routes above the buttress (as mentioned on Gulliver) simply don’t exist.
