I respond to Marco’s concerns on WhatsApp: “You can see the white slope on the webcams. It doesn’t look like there’s much of snow, but it’s there,” backing it all up with irrefutable proof. And so it is that finally one of the team’s original lineups reunites after years, with a super classic in the Ossola region in mind. The meeting naturally takes place early in the morning, at 4:20 a.m., so we don’t miss a thing. We arrive, respecting every speed limit, an hour earlier than the GPS predicted, which doesn’t account for the fact that we scrupulously follow the 90 km/h limit on the winding roads of the Anzasca Valley. The trail psychologically prepares us for the water-skiing on the way back. Our predictions will not be disappointed. The ascent up the gully is beautiful, consistently steep, and the hard snow soon suggests the use of crampons. We reach the spot where we take off our skis and set off toward the summit, but a very strong wind advises us to begin the descent a short distance from the summit. The snow is initially sculpted by the wind, then incredibly beautiful, and finally slushy, with a final stretch of water skiing on the trail (it’s 26 degrees, take a look at the last photo!).
