Averta (Predarossa) - Vertigo
View route detailsAs usual, the weekend weather looks threatening, but if you get ahead of the front the route is still doable… We head up to Val Masino in the evening to sleep in the cool air, confident that in the morning a convenient shuttle will take us up to Predarossa (permits had already sold out on Friday). 7:05 a.m.: as per schedule, no shuttle. 7:30 a.m.: still no sign of the shuttle. We decide that, since it had been suspended in Val di Mello, it must also be suspended here. So we start walking and hurry along to avoid falling too far behind schedule. On the last switchbacks we manage to get a lift in a car. We continue along the Passo Romilla trail, now barely more than a trace, and soon we are (with shoes and trousers soaked) at the base of the wall. The route goes smoothly. We abseil and have just enough time to unrope when a violent thunderstorm starts hammering down. Everything gets hastily stuffed into our backpacks and we take shelter under a boulder just in time to avoid the full force of the storm. Back at the parking lot we find a ride down, but at that exact moment civil protection arrives saying the road is closed due to a landslide, and so the descent race begins… fortunately we had chosen a route with a short approach!
