Cima Piazzi - Per la val di Lia
View route detailsGiven the devastating heat threatening our snow, we decide to head to the coldest place we can access. Only with Lorenzo could I agree to a plan like the one I’m about to describe. The programme is rather ambitious: on Friday I finish work at one, pick him up, and we head to the Branca hut; on Saturday morning we ski the Pasquale, climb up to the Ferrario bivouac under a full moon; on Sunday we summit Cima Piazzi, do four pitches at Isolaccia, and then descend while avoiding the traffic. We arrive in Santa Caterina and discover that the Forni road is ploughed but traffic is forbidden, and that, due to COVID (?!?), parking is only allowed at the lift station silo. The approach suddenly becomes excessive, so we set off straight towards Cima Piazzi. We are romantically guided through the night by a stunning moon all the way to the Ferrario bivouac, half-buried in snow. It is welcoming and well insulated, but we are glad to have brought our sleeping bags. In the morning we set off and are immediately surprised by the quality of the snow. We climb the north face, stop a while on the summit waiting for the clouds to clear, and begin the descent. The first section is crusty, as is most of the north face, but where our ascent track runs it is still full winter and completely untouched. A great outing overall, a beautiful night approach, and we are alone on the summit and on the descent.
